iPhone Rewies again

We’ve been looking into various iPhone 4G-related rumors lately and we can only expect to be hit by more the closer get to the next-gen iPhone launch which should occur in June/July 2010. While we can’t expect Apple, or any of its partners to actually confirm any of these news we’re hearing, we still have to look at pretty much anything that comes our way. Just the other day we were talking about new gestures support found in iPhone OS 3.2 and today we have more details about upcoming iPhone OS versions.

iPhone OS 3.2 is iPad-oriented and although it can offer us details about the future of iPhone 4G, we are really waiting for iPhone OS 4.0 to be announced and reveal all the hot stuff regarding the next-gen iPhone.

One of the most expected updates which iPhone 4.0 is rumored to bring is multitasking. That has been the iPhone’s Achile’s heel as most users complained about its inability to truly run multiple apps at once. But it’s not just the new firmware that has to support multitasking. We expect Apple to launch a phone with a faster processor, more RAM and better battery life which are all features needed to actually support the whole multitasking process. And yes, we expect the iPad to also get multitasking support once the iPhone receives it.

Apple is rumored to have new multitasking capabilities in the works and they should be unleashed once iPhone OS 4.0 is good and ready to launch. That must also mean that Apple will change the whole user interface of the device since now we’ll have to be able to switch between apps running in the background and manage them according to our needs.

The iPhone 4G is rumored to be launched this summer but we don’t have an exact launch date. Some people say Apple will launch it in June while others say July but I think it’s safe to say we won’t get iPhone OS 4.0 anytime soon. So what’s your take on all this, iPhone fans? Will you replace your current iPhone with the new model if Apple will finally enable multitasking support?

Incidentally, if anyone can confirm iPhone multitasking, then, by all means, do try to convince us in that regard but we will warn you that we’ll take everything with a grain or two of salt.

By now you must be used to all the pictures and sketches that hit the web before a hot product launch. We’ve shown you iPhone 4G concepts before and today we have one more for you. The iPhone in the picture above is not dubbed as the iPhone 4G but as the iPhone Pro, a handset that wants to be, simply put, “just better.”

The iPhone Pro is supposed to offer us an even slimmer design which will pack inside a better camera and better audio and a front facing camera for video calls. The iPhone Pro is supposed to run on iPhone OS 3.2 and feature a larger screen too. More importantly, looking at the iPhone Pro we will discover two slide-out “paddles” which are touch-friendly and bring us dedicated gaming controls. A new MagSafe power port is found on the back which means the regular 30-pin port will not be required anymore.

So what do you say, folks? Are you impressed or what? As for me I have to protest against a few features described here. Sure the design is impressive but we already have an iPhone Pro. It’s called the iPad and although it doesn’t have dedicated gaming buttons it will act quite nicely as a mobile gaming platform. It has an even bigger screen which means we’ll be able to use the iPhone for communication-related matters and the iPad for games and apps. That does make sense, right?

And what about that crazy power plug? There are tons of docks made for iPhones and iPods that use the 30-pin port. Why should Apple change the port and thus render all those products useless? In case the iPhone Pro was real then users would need special MagSafe to 30-pin connectors for their docks, wouldn’t they?

And what’s the deal with iPhone OS 3.2? We’re looking forward for iPhone OS 4.0 for the next iPhone versions, aren’t we?

Naturally the device in the pictures here is just a concept so I’ll understand that designers can take all the freedom they want when imagining next-gen products like the iPhone Pro or the iPhone 4G. But I’d like to see these designers approach the matter from a realistic point of view and create next-gen gadgets that would be based on available Apple technology (at least what we know of so far) and thus could actually be feasible for the near future.

We’ll be back with more iPhone 4G designs as this saga will not be over soon. But at least we’ll get to appreciate the amazing work these designers put in as well as add some constructive criticism of our own.

This is not the first time we hear that T-Mobile USA is going to get the iPhone at some point later in 2010. In fact we did talk about this incredible move last year at a certain point in time when the iPhone was rumored to arrive either from Verizon or T-Mobile this year.

The problem for Apple is AT&T when it comes to increasing iPhone sales. What I mean to say about their cooperation is that both companies have already cashed in on the iPhone. Chances are that current AT&T customers that don’t want the current iPhone models will not be that interested in upgrading to the iPhone 4G either. Furthermore the current state of the over clogged AT&T network might convince others not to switch from their favorite carrier to AT&T in order to get the iPhone.

So Apple should definitely try to bring its handset to everyone else in the U.S. I am sure that a lot of Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile loyal customers would be more than interested in getting the iPhone but we’ll look forward to hear from them in the comments section.

Cupertino has already experimented in other important markets like Canada, UK and France where the iPhone is available from more than one carrier as exclusivity agreements have either expired or been discontinued as they were against the law (France).

What makes us say the iPhone is coming to T-Mobile late this year or early next year? Well it looks like Rene Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom, the mothership that controls T-Mobile USA, apparently said that the iPhone is coming by the end of the year but for now the carrier is focusing on Android smartphones.

What’s particularly interesting is that he did not mention what iPhone versions are coming to T-Mobile but I’d think it would be safe to assume the iPhone 4G will be included in the offer. We’ll be waiting anxiously to see whether the iPhone does indeed come to T-Mobile USA later this year or if it was all just a misunderstanding. Of course, Steve Jobs might get all mad that Obermann spoke to the press like that and change his mind.

So what about Verizon and Sprint? Do you think the iPhone will be available from all the Big Four carriers in the USA a la Google Nexus One style?

iPad Rewies again

With iPad preorders officially starting tomorrow, attention has shifted to iPhone 4.0 software and what features it might bring to both the iPad and future iPhone models.

Apple Insider is now adding fuel to the long-standing rumors that the next big update to Apple’s iPhone OS will feature support for multitasking — that is, the ability for third-party apps to run in the background.

As anyone with a jailbroken iPhone knows, the multitasking limitation for third-party applications in the iPhone OS is purely artificial. Whether it is for security purposes, performance or battery life, Apple has chosen not to allow third-party developers (or even third-party Apple created apps) to run concurrently in the background.

This means that if you want to listen to PandoraPandora while surfing the web in Mobile Safari, well, too bad. Of all the complaints levied against the iPhone, this is probably the one that impacts consumers the most. It doesn’t help that you can, for instance, use the iPod application while surfing the web or using other apps.

Push notifications have mitigated some of the need for many use cases for multitasking — but it’s not a true solution.

Multitasking in iPhone 4.0?

Even a year ago, the multitasking issue with the iPhone 3.0 OS wasn’t as problematic as it is now, in part because while competing mobile platforms did offer support for running third-party apps in the background, the competition from those platforms wasn’t as strong.

A year later, we have Palm’s webOS, the BlackBerryBlackBerry Rocks!, Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series, and of course, what many see as the iPhone’s biggest competition: Google’sGoogle Android platform.

For the iPhone to remain as enticing to developers as it is now (and in turn, as attractive to users), future versions of the software will need to support multitasking by third-party applications in some capacity.

AppleInsider says that its sources say Apple has developed a “full-on-solution,” but details about how that solution will be implemented and what rules applications will need to follow to address multitasking was not revealed.

Steve Jobs is famous for taking features out of a product if they don’t meet his standards. As a long-time smart phone user who has used devices on almost every major smartphone platform, I can attest to some of the very real problems that multitasking or excessive backgrounding can cause for those devices.

They include, but are not limited to:

Decreased Battery Life — More apps running at once means more CPU usage, which means battery life can be reduced.

Slowdowns, freezes, crashes — As a long-time BlackBerry user before I migrated to the iPhone, I remember the “three finger salute” reboot mechanism far too well. At least once a day (more often if I happened to open up my RSS reader or my e-mail was particularly heavy) I had to reboot my Berry in order to reset the memory cache and allow the device to work at a pace that didn’t resemble molasses. AndroidAndroid devices I’ve used have had this same problem (although not to the extent as my BlackBerry Curve) and homebrew Palm Pre developers have even written a tool that schedules phone reboots to handle the issue.

Switching apps can be awkward — This is probably one of the biggest challenges Apple will have to face — beyond just the technical tricks for implementing better resource handling and allocation — the mechanism used to switch between open applications can be cumbersome, depending on the type of application. With it’s one-button design, the iPhoneiPhone will likely have to employ some sort of gesture for opening or accessing other apps — if indeed it implements multitasking the same way that BlackBerry and Android do.

Rumors about multitasking coming to the iPhone in a supported form have been swirling for literally years, so any report on whether or not it will be a reality in iPhone 4.0 is pure speculation.

That said, if Apple doesn’t address multitasking with its next big release, it risks falling behind other players moving forward.

We’ve been looking into various iPhone 4G-related rumors lately and we can only expect to be hit by more the closer get to the next-gen iPhone launch which should occur in June/July 2010. Recent data collected via survey shows that Blackberry users are quite attracted to other smartphone platforms, especially Android and Apple’s iPhone.

Some 40% of Blackberry users, according to CrowdScience, prefer the iPhone as their next smartphone purchase. Even more, some 32% of Blackberry users said that they would drop their Crackberry for the latest Android offering, the Nexus One.

As if that was not enough, the same survey found exceptionally strong brand loyalty among current iPhone and Android users. For both camps, 90% of their users plan to stay on their current platforms. What does that mean? Blackberry has a restless userbase, and its two main rival platforms are hardly shedding users.

Of course, Blackberries are more often used for business purposes, so the brand does have inherent strength in that area. However, the mindshare war seems to be already won. Some 7% of Blackberry users only use their Blackberries for business uses. For iPhone and Blackberry users that number is effectively zero.

Of course, this says little of Palm and its Pre other than that it is far enough behind to be left there. As Palm struggles to find its own place in the smartphone world, do not forget that in short order (this year) we will have the new Microsoft line of 7 Series phones.

That is when all of this gets even more interesting. With iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7 Series, the n900, Blackberry, and WebOS all fighting for the same userbase, smartphones are going to get better, quickly. Buckle up, Android and iPhone won this round, but it’s the next that is really going to blow your mind.

Android Battles iPhone for Hearts of Lustful Blackberry Users, Finds Latest Crowd Science Survey

Android Equals iPhone in Smartphone Loyalty: 90% Won’t Change Brand

March 15, 2010 – Silicon Valley, California – Nearly 40% of Blackberry users continue to prefer Apple’s iPhone as their next smartphone purchase, but a third of them would also switch to the Android operating system, according to the second smartphone brand loyalty survey conducted semi-annually via Crowd Science’s (www.crowdscience.com) advanced research platform for online audience measurement. The Crowd Scientists also found Android users rivaling iPhone users in loyalty, with about 90% of each user group planning to stick with their current brand when buying their next phone.

Asked specifically if they’d swap their present phone for Google’s new Android-based Nexus One, 32% of Blackberry users said “yes,” compared with just 9% of iPhone users. This figure zoomed to 60% for users of smartphones not made by Blackberry or Apple.

“These results show that the restlessness of Blackberry users with their current brand hasn’t just been driven by the allure of iPhone,” said John Martin, CEO of Crowd Science. “Rather, Blackberry as a brand just isn’t garnering the loyalty seen with other mobile operating systems.”

Crowd Science’s methodology applies rigorous sampling and research techniques to online populations, allowing for real-time results. Indeed, a significant event affecting the research – the debut of Nexus One on January 5 – occurred midway through the Dec. 24. 2009 to Jan. 21, 2010 study period. Rather than being a disruptive factor, however, the Crowd Scientists were able to measure how the launch affected the attitudes of respondents. For example, awareness of the Android operating system jumped six points – to 66% from 60%. Moving from awareness to familiarity, however, results were stable throughout the research period – at about 10% for all smartphone users excluding Android owners.

Awareness of the Google Nexus One phone itself following launch was found to be 91% amongst iPhone users, 75% amongst Blackberry users, and 73% amongst users of other smartphones.

Other survey results include:

· Android users skew younger and less affluent than iPhone and Blackberry users.

· Users of all types of smartphones had downloaded more free applications than paid ones during the preceding seven days, with iPhone users significantly more likely to pay for apps, Android users leading in free apps, and Blackbery users far behind on both fronts.

· Both Android users and iPhone users were found much more likely than Blackberry users to use their phones only for personal use (32%, 28% and 16% respectively). On the other hand, 7% of Blackberry users use their phone only for business, with that category of user minimal with iPhone (1%) and non-existent in the Android base.

For the survey, the Crowd Scientists tapped 1,140 respondents who were randomly recruited via the Crowd Science Sample Beta program from websites serving more than 20 million unique visitors. The vast majority of respondents (44%) used a regular cell phone, not a smart phone. iPhone users represented 17% of the respondents, followed by Blackberry users (15%), Nokia (10%), Windows Mobile (4%), Android (3%) and Palm (2%).

About Crowd Science:

Crowd Science was formed by experts in online market research and audience measurement with a mission to “raise the bar” in the measurement of online populations. Their goal is to help web properties understand all facets of their audience, including the impact of marketing and outreach efforts on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, through rigorous, verifiable interactive research. The company has developed an advanced platform for audience measurement and real-time survey research.

eBay announced today the launch of the eBay Green Team Challenge, a program aimed at turning green shopping into a tangible environmental impact.

Under the program, the first 250,000 people to pledge to reuse on eBay, the company will protect an acre of rainforest in their name through a new collaboration with Team Earth, a coalition of non-governmental organizations, private sector companies and individuals convened by Conservation International.

Along with the launch of the Green Team Challenge, eBay has introduced a new green shopping site, designed to help people access green products.

The new shopping hub is a result of the requests of eBay Green Team members, a community of nearly 150,000 individuals committed to making greener lifestyle choices.

To promote the challenge, eBay is teaming up with Hearst Magazines for the second year in a row, for their month long "30 Days of Green" program. The collaboration features a three-page ad insert that will run in the April issues of all 15 Hearst magazines. The ads will feature a variety of eBay items and will aim to educate consumers about being green.

"We at eBay are constantly looking for ways to show our community of 90 million users that their shopping decisions can have real environmental impact," said Amy Skoczlas Cole, Director of the eBay Green Team.

"This year, through our collaborations with Hearst and Team Earth, we have the opportunity to not only educate millions of consumers about the green value of shopping used, but translate that action into tangible environmental impact."

Cold War Bunker On eBay Has Bids Reaching $35,000

You'll have to travel to England's Peak District to collect—and when I say collect, I mean “bunker down,” but the 50ft x 50ft bunker in a genuine souvenir from the Cold War, used by the Royal Observer Corps.

It's got electricity, a chemical toilet, and “panoramic views” according to the seller—but you're obviously not buying it for a viewing point across the dales. You're buying it IN CASE OF NUCLEAR WAR.

The 1950s-era bunker is buried 15ft underground, and was used by the Corps to monitor the the threat of nuclear attacks. This particular bunker now lies in private land, but was fully operational until 1991, with three staff working in shifts within the two rooms. eBay seller Chantburgess says “the bunker can continue to be used as limited living accommodation for short periods or adventure holidays.” Did he say “continue”? Does that mean there's a slight possibility the sale of the bunker may provide some comrades in friendly wargames? [eBay via Daily Mail]

Staring at all this, we can't help but feel impossibly normal.

If you're interested, take a knee: To coin a phrase, we suggest you bring a (very large, very oil-proof) trailer. And a healthy dose of masochism. And a bunch of Joe Lucas jokes. And a copy of Norman Dewis's excellent autobiography. And this picture:

…because an E-type's rear suspension is both fun and painful and the kind of thing that can destroy a good man's soul. And many, many bottles of the beer with the best name ever. And a small statue of this guy, because he's the patron saint of desperate causes. And a very healthy multimeter. And a lot of Oil-Dri. And a book of common prayer. And…

Can You Really Become An Ebay Powerseller?

Not everyone who has ever tried selling on eBay has been wildly successful doing so. Those who have been successful we politely call "eBay powersellers." Just what does it take to become an eBay powerseller? It’s a lot of work and determination, for one thing. But, also, it takes having the right plan or strategy for getting the most out of your efforts. If you’ve ever had dreams of becoming an eBay powerseller, you’re best bet for accomplishing this is learning from someone who has been there and mastered it.

While the Internet is littered with self-proclaimed "gurus" of this and that, very few can measure up to the standards in this area that Jim Cockrum does. Jim has been selling successfully on eBay since 1997, which in itself is a testament to his knowledge. He has also written several e-books chronicling his experiences marketing using eBay auction selling. His first and most important e-book about this was The Silent Sales Machine Hiding On eBay. Since that first publication, Jim has updated his book five times to keep up with the changing conditions on eBay. No one knows more about the business of selling on eBay than Jim. You can be certain of that.

The Silent Sales Machine , as the title has been shortened to in this sixth edition, starts you out small and builds as it goes along. For instance, you don’t even need a website to begin as long as you have a merchant account at eBay. You can begin small and build your business at your own pace, which is what Jim recommends. If you do have a website, Jim warns you to be wary of a boost in traffic after reading and implementing the strategies in his book.

As you are able to master and implement one strategy, you’ll go on to the next as you begin to build what he calls "silent sales machines." These silent sales machines are really just another name for "income streams." The more income streams you have working for you on the Internet, the more money you will make. The concept is really just that simple. However, it does take a little bit of work. But you only have to do the work once. After you’re done, you will continue to get paid week after week, month after month, and year after year for the work that you’ve already completed. What could be better than that?

You can learn how to generate thousands of dollars monthly on eBay, like Jim, while only running a small handful of auctions at a time. He shows you how to do this step by step. Another advantage of dealing with Jim is that all new revisions of his book are available free to any buyer of his book. That alone is worth the value, because you’ll always be kept up-to-date with the latest income-producing information.

There’s something for every Internet marketer in Jim’s book. Even if you are a dyed-in-the-wool affiliate marketer, there is something to be gained from reading and implementing the strategies in Jim’s book. Using eBay as a traffic source can exponentially increase traffic to your websites and affiliate sales. If you are a serious marketer, you’re leaving money on the table if you don’t find out about and implement Jim’s suggestions.

Und hier eine Menge Sprüche zum Nachdenken

Alles hat sein Für und Wieder.

Aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben.

Besser spät als nie!

Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm.

Ein gutes Gewissen ist ein sanftes Ruhekissen

Frisch gewagt, ist halb gewonnen.

Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall

Jedes Ding hat seine zwei Seiten.

Kleinvieh macht auch Mist

Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn.

Sage Dir hier ganz still gute Nacht!

Coffee  filters …… Who knew!   And you can buy 1,000  at the Dollar Tree for almost nothing even the large ones.

1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the  microwave. Coffee  filters make excellent covers.

2. Clean windows, mirrors, and chrome…  Coffee filters are  lint-free so they’ll leave windows sparkling.

3.  Protect china by separating your good dishes with a coffee  filter between each dish.

4.  Filter broken cork from wine.  If you break the cork when  opening a wine  bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.

5.  Protect a cast-iron skillet.  Place a coffee filter in  the  skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.

6.  Apply shoe polish.  Ball up a lint-free coffee  filter.

7.  Recycle frying oil.  After frying, strain oil through a  sieve  lined with a coffee filter.

8.  Weigh chopped foods.  Place chopped ingredients in a  coffee filter on a  kitchen scale.

9.  Hold tacos.  Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for  messy foods.

10.  Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot.  Line a  plant  pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going  through  the drainage holes.

11.  Prevent a Popsicle from dripping.  Poke one or two holes  as  needed in a coffee filter….

12.  Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows?   Use  strips of coffee filters..

19.  Use them as a spoon rest while cooking and clean up small  counter spills.

20.  Can use to hold dry ingredients when baking or when cutting a  piece of fruit or veggies..  Saves on having extra bowls to wash.

21.  Use them to wrap Christmas ornaments for storage.

22.  Use them to remove fingernail polish when out of cotton balls.

23.  Use them to sprout seeds..  Simply dampen the coffee  filter, place seeds inside, fold it and place it into a plastic baggie until  they sprout.

24. Use coffee filters as blotting paper for pressed flowers.   Place the flowers between two coffee filters and put the coffee filters  in  phone book..

25.  Use as a disposable “snack bowl” for popcorn, chips, etc.

OH YEAH THEY ARE GREAT TO USE IN YOUR COFFEE MAKERS TOO.

The truth is that cats will make themselves comfortable anywhere. On a bed of coals, or atop Mount Doom, or hurtling through space at 99% of the speed of light, a cat will somehow find a way to curl up and doze off. So the idea of including a special place for your cat to sleep underneath a perfectly good cat bed (in this case a glass coffee table) seems redundant. But let’s be honest — are you going to let a little redundancy keep you from buying a cat hammock?

Alas, like most things worth having, the cat hammock is not real. Sure, there’s one somewhere in Japanese designer Case-Real’s warehouse, but I don’t think they’re going to let you have it.

I think I’m beginning to fall in love with Case-Real — they also designed this stunning amplifier from a few months back. Check out the other stuff on their site; maybe we can convince them to start getting it manufactured.

Vermont-based Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is no stranger to community service. Like many other coffee companies that trade directly with coffee growers and their cooperatives, they have championed a number of initiatives to better the lives of those coffee farmers who make it possible for the business to exist. Thus, it’s no real surprise to see that the organization is one of many specialty coffee companies that have contributed more than $25,000 to Grounds for Health, a Waterbury, VT based organization that has been taking on the problem of women’s health since the mid-1990s.

Grounds for Health was founded by members of the specialty coffee industry who traded with farmers in Oaxaca, Mexico. In the course of the relationships that they developed with farmers and others in the small mountain communities, they learned that women in rural Oaxaca suffer much higher rates of cervical and breast cancer than women in the United States. Part of the reason, they learned, is the lack of access to routine health care and cancer screening.

Thus was born Grounds for Health, a volunteer organization that provides cancer screening services to towns in Mexico, Central America and, most recently, Tanzania. Funded in large part by members of the specialty coffee industry, the program makes use of the networks created by coffee cooperatives to reach women in far-flung rural areas with medical services. According to the Grounds for Health web site:

In many countries where coffee is grown, cervical cancer rates are among the highest in the world. However, this disease is both preventable and, when caught early, one of the most treatable cancers.

Our mission is to bring effective cervical cancer screening and treatment to women in coffee-growing communities. We currently work in Mexico, Central America and Tanzania. We use an innovative, affordable and community-appropriate method called the Single Visit Screen & Treat Approach, which has been endorsed by the World Health Organization.

Our work is made possible through partnerships with local coffee co-operatives, national and regional ministries of health, and specialty coffee companies. These partnerships have made it possible for us to bring better and sustainable health care to women in coffee-growing communities.

To maximize donations to the cause, Grounds for Health operates on a volunteer basis. With the exception of the office staff, everyone associated with Grounds for Health is a volunteer. Those volunteers include doctors and other health care providers who travel to the coffee growing regions to provide the screening and health care services. The services are provided in a one-stop treatment campaign as much as possible to maximize the probability that the needed medical procedures will be carried out.

The ultimate goal for each area with which Grounds for Health works is for the area to eventually be able to manage the health care services themselves. This is what happened in Huatasco, Mexico, where Grounds for Health worked for eight years and helped establish a dysplasia clinic and ongoing screening center for the women in the area.

For more information about supporting Grounds for Health – including information about the Specialty Coffee Auction that raised over $100,000 for the organization last winter – visit the Grounds for Health web site at http://www.groundsforhealth.org.

Most would agree that our Government hasn't been doing much to endear themselves to their constituents for quite some time. In response fringe and not so fringe groups have been sprouting up all over the place, the biggest of course being the Tea Party movement.

But say you are someone that is not happy with the way our government is being run but don't want to necessarily be associated with the Tea Party lunatic fringe, the leader of which can't even spell his racial slurs? There is a new group that might meet your need to express your displeasure, The Coffee Party.

It all started with documentary filmmaker Annabel Park venting her frustrations on her Facebook page about media coverage that made it seem that the Tea Parties were representative of the “real America.” She vehemently disagreed and her comments on Facebook got a lot of feedback from people who similarly felt pent-up and frustrated.

Their name the “Coffee Party” directly references the Tea Party movement and presents itself as an alternative. Park argues elected officials who represent us should work towards positive solutions to the problems the country faces instead of adopting obstructionist political tactics that play on peoples’ fears and which are driven by deliberate misinformation.

The Coffee Party is currently organizing nationwide. It is stressing the message that its members are voters who intend to hold elected officials accountable to holding up progress. Its members will participate and be engaged in the political process.

In addition, the Coffee Party values diversity, is, itself, diverse and completely comfortable with the changing ethnic demographics of the US. Park argues that politicians are exploiting the anxieties people feel regarding these changing demographics for political gain and that it is wrong.

Passwords can be a key to many things, for example your emails, your Facebook profile, or your bank account. Did you know that some people still use passwords like “password” or “123456″? Needless to say, it’s dangerous to use one and the same simple password for all of your online accounts. Imagine a hacker cracked that one password? To be safe, you should create unique and difficult to crack passwords.

So do you know how to create a good password? And how can you remember more than one of them? Here are some tips and tricks to maintain individual strong passwords for all of your online accounts.

Know The Characteristics Of A Safe Password

  • it cannot be found in a dictionary.
  • it contains special characters and numbers.
  • it contains a mix of upper and lower case letters.
  • it has a minimum length of 10 characters.
  • it cannot be guessed easily based on user information (birthdate, postal code, phone number etc.)

Create An Easy To Remember Base Password

You can use several techniques how to create a good password that you will not forget. Here are some suggestions.

  • Randomly replace letters with numbers, e.g. flirt becomes fl1r7.
  • Pick a sentence, i.e. your passphrase, and reduce it to first letters of each word only, e.g. “Everything I Do I Do It For You” becomes EIDIDIFY.
  • Take a word and reverse spell it, e.g. neighborhood becomes doohrobhgien.

These examples are not very safe. While none of the words can be found in a dictionary, they are still failing other characteristics of a safe password. Try to find a combination that allows you to incorporate all characteristics.

The base password I’m going to use for this password is “E1d_1D!4Y:)“.

Note that my base password meets all of the above criteria. It cannot be found in a dictionary, it contains special characters, a mix of upper and lower case letters, it is 11 characters long, and cannot be guessed based on my personal information (unless you suspect that I like Bryan Adams).

Be Creative & Think Out Of The Box!

A computer may calculate faster than you can recognize patterns a lot quicker than any human brain, but one thing it cannot do is be creative. That is your great advantage over hacker tools!

As you see, in my password I replaced some letters with numbers or special characters. However, I didn’t use a stiff set of rules. I replaced the “I” with a “1″ or a “!”. Using rules for replacing characters, i.e. always replacing an “a” with the “@” symbol will weaken your password.

Here are some ideas how you can make it even harder for a hacker to crack your password:

  • Don’t use common substitutions, e.g. @ for A/a.
  • When you have recurring letters within your password, mix your substitutions, e.g. 8 or ( for B/b.
  • Have a word and touch type it with your fingers in the etpmh (wrong) location. Keep in mind that you may switch keyboard types.
  • Pick a pattern on your keyboard and type it with alternating use of the SHIFT key, e.g. Xdr%6tfCvgz/

Test Your Password

Do you want to make sure your password is indeed safe? The Password Meter will reveal details about the strengths and weaknesses of your password. However, if your password is too long, i.e. too safe, this test will actually fail.

Create Individual Passwords For Every Account

Once you have a strong base password, you can use it to create individual passwords for each of your online accounts. Simply add the first three letters of the service, e.g. “E1d_1D!4Y:)GMa” for your GMail account or “E1d_1D!4Y:)eBa” for eBay.

Be Super Safe

To be super safe, you should have TWO base passwords. They will be used to keep important and not so important accounts separate. You would use one password for sites which hold personal information or credit card details, such PayPal or GMail. The second password would be used for forums and similar sites that would not be of great harm if hacked. However, the passwords should be equally strong.

Update Passwords Regularly

This is the toughest part. To maintain safety with a strong password, you have to update your password every few weeks or months. The more often, the better. You can do this in several different ways. Here are some ideas that will keep it simple.

Change your base password only:

  • Change the special character substitutions you’re using.
  • Reverse use of upper and lower case letters.
  • Type the password with SHIFT lock turned on.

Change entire password:

  • Change how you identify the account you’re using, e.g. use the last three rather than the first three letters (GMa would become ail or eBa would become Bay).
  • Change the position of the letters identifying the account, e.g. put them to the front or in the middle of your base password.
  • Add the date of when you last changed the password at the back and mark it in your calendar.

In other words, use your human advantage: be creative and think out of the box.

Considering that laptops are designed to be easily carried and stowed away — and considering just how much important personal and financial information is often stored on them — it's no surprise that they're such a target for thieves. But there are some simple things you should do now in case it's stolen in the future.

Jake Guidry over at Chicagoist recently found himself the victim of laptop larceny and compiled this list of essential tips:

• Have Serial Number and Receipt On File — this will be necessary to prove you are the rightful owner.

• Backup Your Hard Drive — This goes for all computers. Everyone takes for granted just how much they rely on the stored bits and bytes… and just how quickly they can disappear.

• Install Tracking Software — Guidry suggest LoJack, which will help authorities find your computer and (for Mac users) Orbicule, which turns on the iSight camera to record the thieves in action.

And in the sad situation that your laptop is taken, here are some steps you should take to improve your odds of getting it back:

• File A Report With Your Laptop Manufacturer — This could be helpful if some unwitting recipient of your laptop attempts to get it repaired by the manufacturer. It's worth a shot, right?

• File a Police Report — Make sure you have the serial number so they'll know they've found your computer.

• Call the Pawn Shops — Even if they haven't bought your stolen computer off the thieves, they might remember someone trying to sell them one.

• Check Online Marketplaces — Ebay and Craigslist are occasionally used to unload stolen goods. And you never know, sometimes you'll actually find your stuff!

There are obviously many more things we can do to protect our personal property and data. Leave suggestions in the comments!

What's Your Fantasy Craigslist Find?

When we're not working we're on Craigslist or eBay looking for the mint DSM in the rough. The hidden deal. We know you are, too. What's your fantasy Craigslist find?

There's rarely a shortage of E30 Bimmers for sale, but most of them you wouldn't want. A popular target for tuners and street racers, finding a cherry one is quite the challenge. But it's a doable challenge. There are a few one-owner and two-owner babied cars out there. What we're always looking for is the super rare E30 touring wagon version owned by some old woman who purchased it new, with a stick, and drove it to church, the grocery store and home every weekend. Oh, and her son is a BMW mechanic and she's only charging KBB value for it.

One of these days we'll find one without the word “modified” anywhere in the listing.

What about you? What are you searching for? Hope springs eternal and, thanks to the Internet, it's also searchable.

Tips for bidding & winning mentor auctions on EBay:

Identify your mentors.  Select your ideal mentor, and then identify two or three more people that you would be interested in learning from.  It's important to identify several possible mentors in advance in case you get outbid on the mentor you initially wanted.

Know what's included.  Some auctions only include a particular product, some are giving you a couple hours of their time and dinner at WPPI only, and some are willing to give everything they have.  Make sure you're bidding on a mentor that is going to give you something that you really need and value.  Personality alone may not be enough to help you out in the ways you need it, and some people you've never heard of may actually end up being the most helpful.

Watch your favorites.  Once you've identified the mentors you'd like to work with, click “Watch This Item” under the bid button to help keep track of the mentors you're interested in so that you have a quick link and summary for just the auctions you're interested in.

Place maximum bid.  I believe in having a budget and sticking to it, which is why I advocate placing your maximum bid right up front.  This doesn't mean that you are actually bidding your total budget right off the bat, it just means that you're telling EBay the maximum you are willing to donate and then letting the system incrementally bid for you against any potential competition until you've reached your maximum bid.  It's also useful to place your maximum bid an odd amount above the whole dollar amount you've budgeted.  So, instead of $500, bid something like $507.89, so that you're just above the other people who weren't savvy enough to think outside of the zeros.  With this method you may actually win for less than your maximum bid, or you will be notified as soon as someone has busted your bidding budget, so that you can move onto another option that might be within your budget.  It's the most efficient bidding method, so that you aren't spending your precious time watching an auction instead of doing things that will help your business.

Get notification.  You can set up EBay to notify you in a variety of ways, so set up a notification that works best for you- whether it's email, text to your phone, skype, or some other method.  That way you can be on the ball when you need to and not worry about it until then.

Note ending times.  Each auction ends at a different time in order to allow losers from one auction to find another auction they can win.  Note the order in which your favorite auctions end so that you can be proactive about the plan you'll take to find a great mentor so that you can put your donation budget to good use. (Note: It appears that this year's auctions end in alphabetical order by last name.)  If you find that all of the auctions you're interested in are bidding higher than your budget, than it might be a good time to start considering other mentors out there. Remember that your budget was established as what you are willing to donate to the Thirst Relief cause, not just what one person's time is worth.  Everyone in the auction has been invited because they have something valuable to offer, and they've all agreed to participate because they want to help others.  Taking a chance on someone you've never heard of means your bidding budget still goes to a good cause, and you may be pleasantly surprised by what you can learn from someone who spends most of their time working “out of the spotlight”.

Alles hat sein Für und Wieder.

Aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben.

Besser spät als nie!

Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm.

Ein gutes Gewissen ist ein sanftes Ruhekissen

Frisch gewagt, ist halb gewonnen.

Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall

Jedes Ding hat seine zwei Seiten.

Kleinvieh macht auch Mist

Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn.

Sage Dir hier ganz still gute Nacht!

Google Buys iPhone Email Search App reMail and Pulls It From the App Store

The iPhone app reMail is email search the way it should be:

iPhone mail search is fine. reMail iPhone mail search is actually good, if it works for you. Two things: there's no Exchange support (sorry suits!), and there's only support for one account at a time. But within that one IMAP or POP account, reMail archives all your message text as far back as you want, letting you search full text-not just subjects-without a network connection.

But now it's gone from the App Store, because Google just bought the company, and its developer, Gabor Cselle, is now a Gmail product manager (he actually got his start working on Gmail).

Since Google and Cselle went so far as to pull the app from the App Store, you have to wonder what's next. [Gabor Cselle via TechCrunch]

Facebook game companies have become financial juggernauts. That’s because games spread in a viral way to lots of Facebook users. And a small percentage of those users buy virtual goods with real money. If the iPhone could duplicate that pattern, it might also one day generate lots of revenue for game companies.

That’s what Aurora Feint wants to make happen with its Open Feint X social game platform for the iPhone. If it works, it could make the iPhone much more like Facebook in generating business for game makers, said Peter Relan, executive chairman of the Burlingame, Calif.-based company, in an interview.

“We consider Open Feint X to be the beginning of a new business model for the iPhone game industry,” said Relan. “So far, it has been hard to build a business like Zynga on the iPhone.”

Aurora Feint’s existing Open Feint platform is the equivalent of Xbox Live for iPhone games. Developers use the platform to create games with features such as leaderboards, achievements, instant messaging and chat. With Open Feint X, Aurora Feint is extending the platform to be the equivalent of Facebook’s app platform. Developers use the Open Feint X platform to create games where players can create their own profiles that can be accessed from any game. Users can also invite friends to join the game or purchase virtual goods and give them to their friends. Players can create their own news feeds and post on friends’ walls, as they can with Facebook.

The platform is free for developers to use. If they want to tap Open Feint X’s premium service, they have to share revenue with Aurora Feint. The premium services include setting up an online store within Open Feint to sell games or downloadable assets. Other premium services include a game-specific currency wallet and detailed analytics.

If this sounds familiar, it’s like embedding Facebook inside the iPhone. Aurora Feint is essentially doing something that Apple or Facebook should do for the iPhone platform. But those big companies have had other fish to fry, so they left the opening for Aurora Feint to create a platform that socializes iPhone games.

It can do so, Relan said, because Open Feint has critical mass. There are about 13 million users of Open Feint-enabled games; the audience is growing 25 percent a month. About 1,000 games already use the Open Feint platform and another 1,800 are in the works, Relan said.

If Open Feint X succeeds with its ambitions, then it could change the dynamics of the iPhone game industry, which has been a kind of bloodbath. There are 140,000 apps on the iPhone; about 20 percent of them are games. But it’s hard to find companies that have come up with hit after hit after hit. Big brands dominate the list of top iPhone games, while independent companies largely dominate the top ranks of Facebook games.

Relan said that Aurora Feint had 25 employees now, with half of its team dedicated to Open Feint X development. They have worked on it for the better part of a year. Part of the key differentiator for Open Feint X, Relan said, is that it will have a native social network. If you play an Open Feint-enabled game, you can be a member of that network and it will be easy to communicate with friends and discover games.

“In the past, we just connected people,” Relan said. “Now we are talking about having a social network natively built into the iPhone. It will be exclusively focused on gaming.”

Relan said game partners are in a private beta test now and the first games should be launched in April using the Open Feint X platform. Among the partners is DeNA, the Japanese mobile services portal that invested in Aurora Feint last fall. Rivals could include Facebook, which has its own Facebook Connect technology that could be extended, Ngmoco’s Plus+ platform, and Scoreloop.
